S2: Listening Activity #2

TITLE: Candide Overture
COMPOSER: Leonard Bernstein
PERFORMER: London Symphony Orchestra

a.) What did the music make you think of?
First thought while listening to Candide Overture that was written by Leonard Bernstein that was preformed by the famous London Symphony orchestra was bright colors, Autumn wind , sun shine and people dancing .
b.) Did you like the music?  Why or why not?

I enjoyed this piece of art because it really inspires you after a long day of hard work and stress. It lightened up my heart with joy and Leonard Bernstein does a great job giving positive emotions/feelings through his music that he creates.

c.) What does the music do (discuss dynamics, tempos, articulation, etc.)?

In the beginning, the song had a good energetic tempo , giving a BIG and cheerful start. Later on, in the middle, the tempo started to get slower and the song became more calm then from the energetic start it had, by that the sound on flutes highlighted the clear tone giving a very beautiful sound , but still gave a lot of energy. The tempo changed through the song many times , and the London Symphony orchestra did a great job following the conductor.

d.) What instruments/voices do you hear? How are these sounds employed to create the mood of the piece?
I could hear the violins and the marimba that gave the energetic bouncy tone , with trombones and trumpet that were accommodating the sound ,drums that gave the rhythm , cellos that gave the extra edge . And finally, flute and bassoon that gave the calm and clear tone.
